BILTON GRANGE C.P. SCHOOL MONTHLY NEWSLETTER-Jan - Feb 2010
We were delighted to welcome the Mayor of the Borough of Harrogate, Councillor Pat Jones, to the school on the 21st of January. With her consort, she toured the school visiting every classroom to talk to the children and answer questions. A follow up visit has been arranged for next week to allow extra time for questions as the children had so many. Page Evans presented the Mayor with a bouquet of flowers on behalf of the school.
Thank you for your support in all the bad weather in January. We were delighted that apart from having no heating one day and the downfall of snow the next, we were able to remain open. It was an extremely testing time for all concerned, longer and more hazardous journeys to school, no outdoor play and constant gritting! The children in particular were fantastic and put up with the difficulties of being shut in very well, though they were more than ready when we were able to let them out into the playground once again.
We are planning an exciting writing project and would welcome any large boxes, card, plastic bottles, wallpaper end rolls, large cardboard inner rolls e.g. from a carpet, anything in fact from which we can build large structures. These can be brought into school anytime up until the 4th of March. Also, if there is a printer out there who might be able to get hold of any rolls of newsprint we would be happy to pay the cost. Thanks as always for your help.
Ladies Night, organised by the PTA will be held in school on the 5th March between 7.00 p.m. and 10.00 p.m. Further details will be sent later, but we do hope that you will put this date in your diary.
Finally, we break up for half term on Friday 12th February at 3.15 p.m. and return to school on February 22nd at 8.50 a.m.
Dinner Money
I have been informed that between 10 and 15 children daily are forgetting to bring their dinner money. This causes a lot of administrative problems and does put our unique and flexible system at risk, as we may have to revert to paying once a week for school dinners. I know that most parents appreciate the system we have in place, which allows a choice of cooked, cold or packed lunch option and I hope that we are able with your support to continue with this.
Yorkshire County Cricket Club
We are delighted to have been invited to take part in a new joint initiative in partnership with Yorkshire County Cricket Club and Harrogate High School. Miss Walsh has been coordinating the work and took a group of Year 5 children to the Headingley ground last week. The children follow a programme of activities promoting Maths and English through a sports focus. The programme continues on a weekly basis at Harrogate High School until March.
Lucy Barnes reported on her trip to Headingley-“ We had a great time at Headingley last week. We did some sums in the classroom and we also did some games in the classroom. We had a tour of the cricket and rugby ground, that was really fun. Right at the end we had some coaching with two men and one of them was a real cricket player who played for Yorkshire.
