Curriculum

Our aim is to give all children a broad balanced curriculum that is matched to the individual’s needs and makes the most of each child’s ability and potential. It is important that each child finds learning an exciting challenge.

All children will have access to a wide range of skills, concepts and knowledge within the whole curriculum. This includes all aspects of the National Curriculum and follows North Yorkshire’s Curriculum Policy Document.

The teachers in each year group plan together using policies and schemes of work for guidance. Some of the work is taught through topics. These are carefully planned so that all Programmes of Study in the National Curriculum are taught at Key Stage 1 (infants) and Key stage 2 (juniors).

Classes deliver Literacy and Numeracy lessons every day which are designed to improve the quality of teaching and learning within the school.

Copies of National Curriculum documents and School Policies are available in school. Equal opportunities are given a high priority and are included as an integral part of all planning and organisation.

Cross-curricular areas such as Personal, Health and Social Education, Humanities and the Arts are included to provide a broader curriculum. These often include:

• Drama/Music productions provide whole- school focus and an opportunity for all children to perform to a ‘live’ audience of parents and friends.

• A range of cultural experiences including visits to museums and art galleries.

• Involvement in community based and national charities is encouraged throughout the year e.g. Harvest and Operation Shoe Box Appeal.

• Book Fairs are held twice yearly to foster and promote reading. Books are also available from a book club organised by Miss Walsh.

• Y6 pupils are given the opportunity to attend ‘Crucial Crew’ designed for children to gain knowledge of basic Emergency Aid and to follow the correct procedures when faced with a real emergency.

UNIFORM FOR P.E. AND GAMES

All children are required to change for P.E. and games and need plain navy shorts and a plain white T shirt . A pair of pumps for indoor work is required when barefoot work is not appropriate and a pair of trainers for outdoor work in KS2. All Key Stage 2 children must have an outdoor kit for colder weather, consisting of leggings or tracksuit bottoms and a sweatshirt.

PLEASE ENSURE THAT ALL CLOTHING IS MARKED WITH THE CHILD’S NAME.

SPECIAL EDUCATIONAL NEEDS

The majority of pupils will learn and progress within the general teaching arrangements in the school. When we are particularly concerned about the progress or behaviour of a child, we will always discuss this with parents. We may then ask you to help at home, plan a specific programme for a child in school or on occasions seek advice or help through a referral to Pupil Support Services.

There is a clearly defined procedure for the identification, provision and monitoring of children who may have Special Educational Needs. Our Special Needs Co-ordinator will explain this fully to parents when required.

We can and have admitted disabled pupils. Facilities have been provided for wheelchairs including ramps and a toilet. The admission procedure for such children is exactly the same as that for all other pupils.

We believe it is important for children to carry out learning tasks at home. We have devised a structured framework as a means of ensuring a consistent approach to homework. The following shows what pupils are expected to complete during a week with approximate times.

SEX EDUCATION

Sex education is planned as part of the science curriculum, health education and personal! social education.

It includes hygiene, being safe, healthy life-styles and growing up. This is taught throughout the school either as specific lessons, or in response to children’s questions.

For Year 6, the school nurse talks to the children about the changes experienced in puberty. All parents are informed about this and can attend if they wish.

RECORDING ACHIEVEMENTS

We record your child’s achievements in all areas of the curriculum. We also look at your child’s personal qualities and how he!she relates socially. Children are asked to bring information about personal achievements from both inside and outside school, ranging from simple kindness to achievements in organisations. These may be brought to our Friday Assembly when some children are presented with a Heart of Gold, Certificate or Special Award.

ASSESSMENT

In Reception, Year 2 and Year 6 your child will be assessed according to statutory guidelines set down for Baseline Assessment, Key Stage 1 and Key Stage 2 of the National Curriculum. Teacher assessment, however, occurs all the time. This ensures that your child has continuity and progression within and beyond the National Curriculum and enables the school to provide information for other teachers and you as a parent.

REPORTS

Two Parents’ Evenings are held each year, one in the Autumn term and one in the Spring term, when verbal reports on your child’s progress are given by the class teacher. You are also welcome throughout the school year to discuss your child’s progress with the teacher. In the Summer term you will be provided with a written report of your child’s progress and achievements throughout the school year. If your child is in Year 2 or Year 6 then the National Curriculum assessments will also be reported.
